PHOENIX, Arizona -- Three bounty hunters who police say were hired by a Flint bondsman are facing charges in the January shooting of a Flint fugitive who fled to Phoenix.

Gregory L. Bryant is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and bail/bond agent violation.

Ponciano Gonzalez and Michael B. Wagner are also charged with bail/bond agent violations.

Bryant is accused of shooting Henry W. Smart III, 25, on Jan. 13 as he climbed out the window of a Phoenix apartment.

The bounty hunters told police they had driven from Michigan to Arizona to nab Smart after he skipped town while awaiting court on a Flint bank robbery two years ago.

Bryant told police that he was watching the outside of the apartment complex when Smart tried to escape. In the ensuing struggle, Bryant claimed his gun accidentally went off.

Smart was shot in the chest but survived. He is now in the Genesee County Jail.

A Phoenix grand jury indicted the bounty hunters on charges of failing to notify local authorities that they were looking for a fugitive.

Bryant was ordered held last month on $50,000 bond while the other two bounty hunters were freed on $1,080 bonds.

All three men have entered not guilty pleas in the case and trials are scheduled for the fall.

Arizona was the State where the idiots went into (an alledged wrong) a house that initiated the legislation in 2000 authored by Arkansas' own Asa Hutchison . . . how difficult is it to stop by the Local PD (dispatch) or dial that #

While doing this type work you must ask yourself is the reward worth the risk. The simple answer is to always obey the rules and regulations for the jurisdiction that you intend on operating in.

I personally find that contacting law enforcement is a useful tool in my low impact approach to bail recovery. That way the local law enforcement agency can decide if it will take the lead in the fugitive re-arrest or just let me do my job, secondly they will know who it is when they get the call for a large burly man with gun taking a fugitive into custody.

The secret that I learned some thirty five years ago as it relates to law enforcement, security, bail enforcement , or any job for that matter is to go home alive and try to live to be old man.
