If anyone knows of anyone that has any German Shepherd pups for sale or donation from a reputable breeder, please contact me here via e-mail or pm. They should have all current shots, registrations, and be no older than 12 mos. The selected pups will be used and trained for leo style k-9 training in searching, tracking and apprehending fugitives. |

RWB, I have also been looking into this idea for a bit because we do protection work with our great dane and also are going to start tracking. My question is have you been able to find any information regarding the use of working dogs in the industry more specifically apprehention? I have not found anything really specific. And also certification requirements. I have look some, but have only found law enforcement certification and even with this there is no national certification requirements it is handled at state level. |

Yes, I have found out quite a bit of information since initiating this post. You can purchase leo-trained k-9's, complete with certifications/pedigrees/bloodlines from a number of reputable breeders both nationally and internationally. Or, you can purchase a pup from the same breeders and then train specifically with your pup so he/she is trained only to you and you alone. Also, "ready made" police k-9's purchased overseas are typically trained in that country's language..Dutch, German, French, etc...not English..for obvious reasons...your basic criminal normally isn't going to be familiar with foreign languages, unless your particular AO is of that ethnic origin..then I would consider another language that isn't common in your AO. Also, I found the Military Working Dogs for adoption that is listed in a seperate thread. Some of these animals have been trained by the Air Force for a variety of things, but they are militarily trained..so you would kind of be hiring a "combat vet" so to speak. There are also a number of independent trainer's available nationwide who provide leo training for various police departments. A check with your local pd can provide you with thier specific trainer/school and you can work with that school in custom designing a specialized training program that is industry specific. What I have been told as well as discovered in my research is that the Belgian Malinois Breed, for the time being, is the preferred breed for police type work. They have a longer life span than other typical police k-9 breeds used in the past, 10-14 yrs as opposed to German Shepherds, Rotties, Doberman's etc whose typical lifespan is only 10 yrs, and thier working years are only about 6...typically from ages 2-8 or so. Malinois are also favoured due to thier temperament. Other breeds are typically 1 owner dogs for life...can't be trusted around small children or don't mix well with other family pets. None of these issues, generally speaking, are characteristic of the Malinois. Like most breeds, there is a nationwide Malinois rescue operation for abused/negelected/rejected animals. It is possible to adopt one of these younger animals and attend a leo k-9 training school together. The highest adoption fees I saw on thier website was like $250.00. Now the adoption coordinators that I have been corresponding with in the last few days have advised me that rescued Malinois typically do not make for good work dogs. Why they say this, I am not sure. I've adopted alot of dogs over the years, varying breeds, and have never had a training or temperament problem with any of them. My opinion is that once an animal understands they are truly loved, cared for, and safe that you will earn thier trust and undying devotion and are extremely eager to please so thus will adapt and learn accordingly. |

Another reason the Malinois is so like is they are an extremly high drive dog so they always want to work. Just be ready to have your hands full with them. |

Ruffin Thanks for putting me in contact with Mr. Berry. I just received the pictures of Simba this morning. If all works out I would love to bring her home about a week before Christmas. Thanks again |
