Post subject: | Strange phone call |
I received a phone call from a Michigan number from a guy claiming to be Chris Johnson with a bail bonds company saying he was working out of their Chicago office, and that a defendant I have posted a wanted poster for publicly, was due to return to his office and put money down on a new bail on their area for a friend of his. Immediately, my mind went to a scam I read about in the forums (that I can't find now) where someone would claim to have a recovery agents defendant in custody, and was scamming people in our industry. I can't remember the exact details of the scam. Long story short, I called him out on the scam and he defended himself saying he hasn't asked me for a dime. I told him to contact the ball bond company directly - my recovery services are within Arizona only and his information was outside my jurisdiction. Anyone familiar with the scam or the name Chris Johnson? Is he legit? I may have passed on an opportunity to capture my defendant in Christmas, but followed my gut instead. Any help? |

There is someone running a scam like this and he has been at it for a while. Not to mention that commercial bail bonding is not permitted in IL so no legit bail bond company would have an office in Chicago. |

This is Christopher Nicholas Douglas out of Toledo Ohio. He also is trying to scam people by using a fake company called, Michigan Court Services. What he will do is try and get the bail bond company or recovery agent to send him money via a pre paid card or by wire transfer. He will talk a good game and many have fallen for his scam. For the life of me I don't understand why the surety companies have not put out a warning to all their agents about him. He has been doing this for at least 7 years that I know of. |

I've collected quite a bit of information regarding this individual over the years and I'm wondering as to whether or not I should post it here in this thread... |

Chuck Jordan beat me to it, no bail in IL, first clue. 2nd is that publicly posted wanted posters attracts this kind of attention. Scam and Tony nailed it. Scott |

I will be sending out a request to the American Bail Coalition to put the word out about this guy. It is about time the surety companies start to earn their fees and help out their agents. I know there are some local Ohio agents just trying to get their hands on this guy. If they do he may join Jimmy Hoffa on vacation. |
