I live in Michigan, can I just go out and start hunting? From what I am reading there aren't many regulations. There is a lot of doubt in my mind that I could just call up a bail place, find a target, trace someone down (which I have been practicing doing) and capture them and drive them to a jail.

There has to be more to it right?

There was some making of new laws in Michigan about recovery work, but I don't think they went to affect. I do know that a lot bail company's use in house agents in Michigan to do their pick-ups for them. Michigan is a tough state to do recovery work in. There are many good company's (Bail Company's) there and there are many bad company's (Bail Company's). The bad bail company's hire about three to four different people to share for their skips. Stay away from those company's. You'll get burned real quick.

As for the recovery laws, their isn't any at this time.

It is a little bit more complicated that. Laws are not just there to give you a hard time. They are there to protect you as well. So, don't think that a lack of laws and regulations is a good thing. When I first started, I thought it could be that simple; just start hunting. Read, read , read.... If anything, not have enough laws is a hurdle to us.

Also, bondsmen in a city/county/state that does not regulate bail recovery will, if they are smart, be even more stringent in their requirements for fugitive recovery contractors in the absence of the, however minimal, screening process required to be licensed or certified. Did that make sense? (Seemed like it rambled, just a bit.)

To clarify: Without licensing or certification to give them at least some level of comfort in your training/education, the smart bondsman will grill you six ways to Sunday before hiring you to handle his liability.
