I'm looking to be recovery agent in Indiana, but I got some questions. I've searched for a while, but I can't find any schools of the sort. The booklet of Indiana's Bail Agent & Recovery Agent Laws doesn't mention that I need to attend any school though. Just that I need to pass the exam. Maybe somebody here could help me out here? I'd hate to spend the $300 on the exam and find out I missed something.

Ninja lets start at the beginning--why do you want to be a bea-what backround do have-and what do you know about this lifestyle(and believe me it is a lifestyle not just a career)ALSO WHERE DO LIVE AND WHERE DO YOU INTEND TO WORK all of this is important -this info will wake you up to the ral life of bea--you will get responses from some real beas not just dime store cowboys some will say go head some will say stay away--you need to make that decision after you weigh the facts and fictions about bea also if you can make a living doing this--I THINK YOU WILL BE VERY SURPRISED BY THE ANSWERS YOU RECIEVE AFTER YOUR POSTS

Why do I want to? I've always had an interest in justice, but not in being a police officer. Went with a bounty hunter to see how he does things, and it's something I'd like to do.

What type of background do I have? That depends what you mean by background. Can you specify on that a bit?

Where do I live and intend to work are similar. Marion, IN.

Ninja-just your handle gives the wrong impression at first glance-true bea works with his head not his hands

next question was why do you want to be a bea-reason i asked was what is your motivation--do you just want to impress the ladies do you want to kick butt-do you want to get the bad guy off the street than become a cop-you said you do not want to be a cop why-do you not want to follow orders or rules you do not think are needed or are good--in reality we must follow more rules than the police-everytime we go out to make a arrest we hang by a thread-remember we have no police powers-is some a --hole cop going to screw with us--is some a --hole bondsmen going to give the same case to multiple beas causing danger to all--again remember we have no multi million dollar town behind us-we have no state behind us-we have a bunch of liberal a--holes lawyers looking to hang us out to dry every time we turn around

next is backround -do you have any military or law enforcement or even pi work in your backround--can you skip trace-what are you like under pressure--again what makes you think you can live on the streets hunting people that can hunt you back and are more than capable of killing you or maiming you or worse-

last but not least--can you earn a living doing this--are there alot of skips in your area-what makes you believe the local bondsmen will give you work instead of his regular bea-remember this is a business not a game -can you afford the thousands of dollars needed to buy insurance

all of these questions are important before you start on this road--i do not mean to tell you you can not succeed only to show you this is not what you think it is---THE BOUNTY HUNTER IS DEAD LONG LIVE THE BEA--

I have good reasons for not wanting to be a cop, believe me. Don't feel like getting into them.

Don't worry. I know ya'll work with your heads. I actually have done some PI work too. As it turns out, its not satisfying enough. No military or police background, but I have training in a number of armed and unarmed fighting styles. If your curious as to what....

Tae Kwon Do
Hapkido
Wrestling
Togakure-Ryu Ninjutsu
Southern Dragon style Kung Fu

As for the last question, plenty of skips here. Plenty more when I move to Desert Hot Springs, CA.

Post subject:  GOOD STUFF

Ninja all of the martial arts are great and i applaud you for taking them-here the big but again--i did not see any courses in phycology or law - heres another thing i am a 50+ year old fat guy with a hip and knee replacement that from 21 feet wiil put you or most anybody else down with 1 shot from a taser(do not think that bads guys do not have them)

how about facing both barrels of a 12 guage at 20 or 30 feet all that training in martial arts is usless----important to remember If YOU HAVE TO GO HAND TO HAND WITH A SKIP YOU FAILED IN TACTICS

another thing listing martial arts is a sure way to get most bondsmen to toss you resume in the trash-you become a liabilty risk

my advise find a good local bea -talkto him go on some ride alongs and study him if hes a pro you will see the real world of bea clearly not the tv version

I've had education in psychology and the law, learned alot of the law from PI work, I also mentioned my armed combat skills including guns. I went for a ride along with a BEA before, but I wouldn't mind going for another. Thanks for your advice, mate.

Ninja,
We service the city of Marion, IN i have not noticed an over load of cases coming out of there to be truthful only three all of last year, this is not to say the local Bondsman didn't pick up there own and could have been busy. I also noticed you posted you have done some PI work, was this in Marion, IN as to date there are only 5 licensed PI & Security Agencies in Marion and i know the owners of all 5 so i may have seen or met you at some point as we refer back and forth quite often. In Indiana the price for a Recovery Agents license is $300 plus $100 for the test for a total of $400. If you are planning on moving to CA anytime soon it would not benefit you to get an Indiana license as it would be null & void for the State of Ca. Of coarse this is only one person opinion.

I was going to make the same point about his moving to CA. If you plan to work there, you have to meet CA training and licensing. It is NOT reciprocal with other states. So, you need to read up on CA laws and requirements instead of wasting your money in IN.

As to riding along with someone, that is good to see if it is something you might want to pursue. Just make sure it is also on a day when you sit in a closed vehicle for 12 hours hoping to see your skip, or get to talk to lying friends and family who call you bad names and threaten you with everything they can think of. This is more the norm than walking to a door and your skip walking out and giving himself up. It's a lot of long boring non-paying hours since you only get paid for results. In PI work you get paid for investigating. In BE, you only get paid when the person is in custody by you making or causing the arrest.

I'm not trying to discourage you either, but it is all part of the job. If you have done some PI work, you may have run into some of this, depending on what type of investigations you did.
