Do we have any Private Investigators in TN.? or does anyone know of a reputable PI in TN. that would be willing to speak with an inquisitive person on the topic of how to get started with the licensing aspect? I have done some research and sadly still need a little bit of information, maybe it is just me but it seems to be a little confusing and I would just like to get the opinion of a PI here in TN. PM me with any info on this please. |

Thank you Marshall, I have looked into the laws and how to obtain the license but was just looking to talk with a PI here to get some more information and a better understanding of the laws and requirements. For one I am uncertain if I could just start my own PI firm or do I have to be Affiliated with a Firm First. That part of the law seems to have me slightly confused,I knew we had some Investigators here and was hoping there may have been one in TN. or that knew the Tn law pertaining to investigators. Not that I would mind at all being affiliated with a PI firm,It may even be better that I was at first just to have a more experienced person in my corner.I am just unclear on the actual law that states that I need to be affiliated with another PI firm, but than again The application has a area were you can apply for a company license as well and it appears that I wouldnt have to be affiliated if I went that route. This is just my attempt to get more solid information so that I can make an educated decision on if I want to get into the PI business or not.I was aking here first before I cold called a PI in my area due to the fact that I already know most of you and the information I have recieved here in the past has been very helpful to me. |

Jay, You can apply for a company license and receive it without being a Private Investigator. To perform the work as a PI you will have to be affiliated with a company be it yours or someone Else's. It is the same here i hold a Private investigations firm license and i have an individuals PI license. Any body can hold the company license so you could farm out all your jobs to individual licensed pi or you can license your own in house people. any way you go you will have to be affiliated with a company. It sounds complicated but it is not, it is two different licenses and you will have to pay for two licenses if you want to own the company and be able to do the work as a pi. It's a money thing. |

Jay, Feel free to give me a call about this. The law changed last year as to who can hold a P.I. Company License. It now requires that you have 2,000 verifiable hours of investigative experience to hold a company license. |

Thank you Curtis. I knew the 2000 hrs was in the mix but was not sure if the law was in effect. Thats what is cool about networking. I use to keep up on all the state pi laws when i held multiple state licensing but since i got sick i have let them all go except for Indiana. It's 4000 hrs here in Indiana |

The TN state website is not the most clear when it comes to licensing. They closed the loophole where you could automatically license your own company. About time in my opinion. If you need any further help, feel free to call me |
