Post subject:  Virginia Tech Memorial Ride

On May 1, 2010, there is a memorial ride to Blacksburg Virginia... honoring and remembering the students and faculty that were slain in the tragic school shooting, Monday, April 16, 2007.

Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people and wounded many others, before committing suicide. The massacre is the deadliest peacetime shooting incident by a single gunman in United States history, on or off a school campus.

This ride will be attended by many bikers from all over the country... my group will come out of the Richmond area on Saturday morning, May 1 around 7AM... we will have breakfast and leave for Charlottesville VA and Stanton Va where we will visit the Harley shop in that area and have lunch. We will stay overnite in the Blacksburg area Saturday (I think many are staying in Christiansburg) and ride over to Blacksburg to the campus and whatever else is planned will take place on Sunday. There is supposed to be a police escort from Richmond.

The exact itinerary is spotty right now but I will update it as it comes into focus. If you own a bike of any kind and would like to ride with us on this event, please check back from time to time and I will get the particulars on this site as needed.

UNBELIEVABLE RIDE........... PICTURES AND A STORY TO FOLLOW................. everyone is home safe and sound... several accidents but no bikers hurt... stupid 4 wheelers cutting in and out... but nothing serious thank goodness... estimated over 300 by the time we got to Blacksburg... POLICE ESCORT FROM RICHMOND ALL THE WAY TO BLACKSBURG (VT)... ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.............. let me get some pictures done and the story to follow...............

Post subject:  Re: Virginia Tech Memorial Ride

Friday nite had a nice meal and visit with friends at the Steel Horse Bar and Grill off Rt. 10 in Colonial Heights, Va.... I had two big glasses of ICE WATER.... right.... ice water... I do not drink when I am on a bike (or any other vehicle unless I am a passenger and then only if the driver is not drinking)... good advice for you newbies...

Saturday 7am... breakfast back at the Steel Horse... pancakes and bacon and a lot of coffee... about 120 showed up for the ride which was lead by the local police department as escorts...

Image

We pulled out around 8:30, hit I-95 north... to I-288 up to I-64... you can check me out on this but we were running in excess of 80MPH with two locals on our front door with blue and red lights flashing... all the way to Charlottesville... there were at least 2 cars and I figure around 5 or 6 motorcycle cops that stayed with us all the way to Blacksburg... we got to Charlottesville where we took a break got some gas... I laid down in the grass and about threw up, I was already having cramps and stomach muscle spasms, that leg was 85 miles at 85 mph !!!... and picked up another 100 or so bikers now we were up to over 200 for the ride over to Staunton, Va. off I-81

We rode over to Shenandoah Harley off of I-81 and had lunch... now we rode from Charlottesville to Staunton on Rt. 250 over to Rt. 11... right through the middle of Waynesboro... the motorcycle cops blocked every red light and we breezed right through town without stopping... it was unbelievable... everyone stayed in line and behaved and the ride was moving along extremely orderly. People were pulling over on both sides to let us go through... the cops were unbelievable and extremely helpful... I was really impressed. We got to Shenandoah Harley and were greeted by the Hooter girls which really upset my son and grandson... I was upset too... sort of.... but of course I am much more mature and in control than my youngsters.... 8) I TOOK THE PICTURE...SEE THE LOOK THAT GIRL IS GIVING ME ON THE RIGHT....

Image

I had to get a cold drink right after this....

Image

Image

We had a nice meal and registered and then took off for the leg to Blacksburg... we did the same thing all the way down Rt. 11.... no stop lights.... every major intersection and light was blocked off by the motorcycle cops and the lead cars led us with lights and sirens... we also had about 4 chase cars with the Hooter girls and some other folks coming along to help in the event of any problems... we even had a trailer in case someone broke down...

Several pictures while riding... sort of hard to do but I did the best I could while trying to hold it in the road...

Image

Image

Image

This last one gives a pretty good idea of the size of the ride... look close and you can see that the line goes out of sight... taken over my shoulder... and we were toward the end of the line.... there were many more than that in front...

Arrived in Blacksburg around 3pm and had a memorial service in front of the area that the campus Memorial had been erected... very touching... all the money raised went to a memorial scholarship fund. One of the parents of a young lady killed was with us and gave a short talk... everyone had tears... the campus roads were lined with people that clapped and really made us feel that we had done something important... this was the third annual ride and I suppose there will be more... here a just a couple of more pictures of the set up on the campus of Virginia Tech... hope it was ok to post all this on this site... figured you might find it interesting.
