I think the smart thing to do is perform an honest critique and assessment of your entire team. List out skill sets, talents, contacts, connections, training, education, experience etc. Understand that a strong network of trusted professionals is essential, as Dave said, to your success. You can even coordinate knocking on the same door in different states at the same time...and it has happened with the members here. Members here have also relayed captured fugitives to the wanting bondsman, by splitting up the trip, often for free, just to get to know someone that they have read allot on or heard of on here, I know that I have. (That is how I met the infamous Joe Stiles...and he paid me anyway, class act!) Remember that a computer will get you close, but friends and relatives will get you on your man. To be successful, you have to be computer literate and street savvy. You can't be afraid to knock on a door and just start asking questions of neighbors, carrying your "There is a sex offender in the neighborhood and we want him out petition" or similar ruse to help identify your subject. You have to have developed law enforcement contacts, BEFORE you need their help, for when you need information, soft assistance or to pass the case to them after he is located on particularly dangerous skips. (My son and I brought a guy out of a southern state that was on the FBI Terrorist Watch List) Communicate...with your vocabulary, your appearance, your body language, your professionalism...everything you do is a form of communication, be conscious of it and don't send out mixed messages. Practice interviewing in a mock situation. How do you interview several people at once? How do you communicate with your partner that you have all of the information needed to locate the skip and to stop interviewing and leave with out the sources knowing that you got what you came for? The time to learn these things is not after you just blew the only lead on a case that you have worked on for months. This is a very serious business. Learn all you can, from anyone you can. Practice discernment. Not all that you learn from one individual may be applicable where you live and work, but some ideas may work. Lastly, be of value to all you interact with. Approaching with an empty hand will have you leaving with the same burden. Get to know Criminal Attorneys, put their card in the defendants pocket when you surrender them to the jail. Call the attorney with their names. Sometimes, using a lawyers card with family members may help you close a case, help the defendant get the counsel that he or she needs, get you paid and the circle goes around. Why do you do this? Because if you stay at this game long enough, you or one of your team will need that attorney, and if you are of value to him, you won't pay. Best of luck, and I think it is time to round up the 4 Scotts for another class! Scott |

My best FR tool without doubt is my partner. A partner who has strength in areas that you dont is essential. I also think it helps that my partner is a female. Many times we have talked to the same person, they may give me nothing and my parter her whole life story and vice versa. |

I'll agree with that one! My girlfriend "Mouth" and I work together. Many of the doors we knock on are apartment complexes. Everyone checks out the peep hole first. Alot of those doors wouldn't have opened if the people inside looked out and saw my mug or one of the other guys! There's also been times that we needed an up close and personal look at a subject in a store for example. There again, they don't think twice about some girl glancing at them. Invaluable! |
