I learned something today that I did not know regarding Bounty Hunting in Kansas. This may be common knowledge to most but I was unaware so I thought I would share. Pursuant to KSA 22-2809a(2)(b) a bounty hunter must alert local law enforcement in the city or county where the apprehension will be made. Also the necessary documents and I.D. need to be presented to LE before apprehension. Any surety or agent of a surety, commonly referred to as a bounty hunter, who intends to apprehend any person in this state pursuant to K.S.A. 22-2809 and amendments thereto, or under similar authority from any other state, shall inform law enforcement authorities in the city or county in which such surety or agent of a surety intends such apprehension, before attempting such apprehension. The surety or agent of a surety shall present to the local law enforcement authorities a certified copy of the bond, a valid government-issued photo identification, written appointment of agency, if not the actual surety, and all other appropriate paperwork identifying the principal and the person to be apprehended. Local law enforcement may accompany the surety or agent. |

That is probably a good idea anywhere, even if it is not the law. I do it anyway. In VA you have to announce yourself at the door when you are preparing to enter a residence.... by law.Not always a good idea but you have to say.......... "Bail bondsman".... as you knock... go figure. |

I agree with Bill Marx, but then I always do, most of the time:) Always a good idea to check in, the locals might know the guy anyway, and have current information. I was in Alabama one time and had local LEO swear that i was a Fed and not just a Bounty Hunter. I asked him why when I never ID'd myself that way...he said we would never put a black and white officer in the same car down here. I looked at my partner and he gave me the famous "Let's get out of this cracker ville burg before somebody gets strung up" look! Scott |

I agree that it is always a good idea. I always have notified local LE. It really helps if you have to sit surrveillence for some time or stake out on a residence. They know your not stalling if the call comes in....or atleast, you are professionally stalking. Also, many time I have had them say that they will be sure to have an officer in the area "Just in case". That is always a welcomed backup. |

Not a requirement in AZ as far as I've read, but definitely a good idea. LEOs out here are for the most part familiar with FRA laws and just stand back to keep the peace. Sometimes it's just a matter of calling dispatch and letting them know. Can't say how many times we got a call back saying the family reported a kidnapping, home invasion, robbery, car theft (for repos), etc. Definitely worth it! |

I guess I have to remember a knock on a Florida door one time when I actually said... "Pizza Hut"! and the guy jerked the door open and said.............. "Sh-t, I didn't order no GD pizza"... then his eyes got big and my assistant put the cuffs on him and after we got him in the car on the way back to Virginia... he actually said... and I quote... "So... I guess you don't really have any pizza, do you??" |

I have found that it is always better to notify the local law enforcement agency that you will be conducting an operation in their jurisdiction. This lets them know that you are a true professional and not some dumbass cowboy looking to ride in and out of town with guns a blazing. Most times I have found that the small two to ten man agencies will assist you with the recovery insofar as it is the most action they have had all year. Also I like what Scott said, I been to some of those one horse towns like the he spoke of, both as a police officer and as a BEA, on those few occasions I have put the onus on the locals to help me get that shythead out of their town and back up north where we allow criminals to run free, and bad mouth their country. |
